The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.
P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.
P Our help is in the name of the Lord,
C who made heaven and earth.
P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,
C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.
Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.
P O almighty God, merciful Father,
C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.
P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
Come, O children, lis- | ten to me;*
I will teach you the fear | of the Lord.
Oh, taste and see that the | Lord is good!*
Blessèd is the man who takes ref- | uge in him!
Oh, fear the Lord, | you his saints,*
for those who fear him | have no lack!
The young lions suffer want and | hunger;*
but those who seek the Lord lack | no good thing.
Glory be to the Father and | to the Son*
and to the Holy | Spirit;
as it was in the be- | ginning,*
is now, and will be forever. | Amen.
Come, O children, lis- | ten to me;*
I will teach you the fear | of the Lord.
P Glory be to God on high:
C and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.
We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee,
we glorify Thee, we give thanks to Thee, for Thy great glory.
O Lord God, heav’nly King, God the Father Almighty.
O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ;
O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,
that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us.
Thou that takest away the sin of the world, receive our prayer.
Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us.
For Thou only art holy; Thou only art the Lord.
Thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost,
art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
P The Lord be with you.
C And with thy spirit.
P Let us pray.
Lord Jesus Christ, You have entrusted to Your people the task of teaching all nations. Enlighten with the wisdom of Your Holy Spirit those who teach and those who learn that the joyous truth of the Gospel may be known in every generation; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C Amen.

4“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
10“And when the Lord your God brings you into the land that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you—with great and good cities that you did not build, 11and houses full of all good things that you did not fill, and cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant—and when you eat and are full, 12then take care lest you forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 13It is the Lord your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear. 14You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are around you, 15for the Lord your God in your midst is a jealous God, lest the anger of the Lord your God be kindled against you, and he destroy you from off the face of the earth.”
A This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
C The fear of the Lord is the beginning of | wisdom,*
and the knowledge of the Holy One is | insight.
Let the wise hear and increase in | learning,*
and the one who understands obtain | guidance.
Hear, my son, your father’s in- | struction,*
and forsake not your mother’s | teaching.
37Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” 40And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” 41So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
A This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

[Delete the "Alleluia" at the beginning and the end of the Proper Verse since this is sung as the Triple Alleluia by the Congregation before and after Pastor chants the Proper Verse.]
P Alleluia. For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. Alleluia.
P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the eighteenth chapter.
C Glory be to Thee, O Lord.
15Now they were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them. And when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. 16But Jesus called them to him, saying, “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 17Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.”
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise be to Thee, O Christ.
Our Hymn of the Month is sung in place of the Apostles Creed, utilizing it as Dr. Luther intended - a way of confessing the Creed in song. It also serves as our Sermon Hymn today.

As the offerings are brought forward, the children receiving gifts come forward to the altar together with their parents and Godparents.
P Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, in Holy Baptism God has made these children heirs with us of the glories of His Kingdom. Let us remind ourselves of the pledge we made to these children on the day of their baptism:
C We received you in Jesus' name as our brothers and sisters in Christ, that together we might hear His Word, receive His gifts, and proclaim the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light.
P Hear the Word of our Lord from the last chapter of Matthew:
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you." (Matthew 28:19-20a ESV)
God has begun this work of discipling in the lives of these children as they were delivered through the waters of Holy Baptism. We are the instruments of God in continuing this work as we raise these children in the fear and love of the Lord. It is altogether fitting and proper that, as a congregation, we assist these parents and Godparents in instructing their children in the Christian faith by placing in their hands suitable books for teaching the faith.
P The Lord God, by His Holy Spirit, has caused all Holy Scripture to be "written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope." Such learning takes place when we hear "the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience."
The Lutheran Confessions, including the Small and Large Catechisms of Dr. Martin Luther, are true and faithful witnesses to the truth taught in Holy Scripture.
It is fitting that these Bibles and books of Biblical instruction be sanctified by the Word of God and prayer.
P Our help is in the name of the Lord,
C who made heaven and earth.
P Let us pray.
O God, You have given us Your holy Word to be a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. We implore You to bless these Bibles, which are Your very Word, and these catechisms, which speak the simple truth of Your Word. Enlighten the hearts and minds of those who read from them, and open the ears of all who hear the Gospel proclaimed from them, that by Your Spirit they may earnestly hold fast to Him who is the way, the truth, and the life, even Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C Amen.
P May the Lord Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, bless these T Bibles and these books T of Christian instruction.
C Amen.
Pastor then hands the Bible or Catechism to the parents of the child(ren).
P God has appointed parents to provide for the instruction of their children in His Holy Word, and the people of God gathered as His Church to assist you in this great task. We therefore give these gifts of instruction to you, the parents, to aid you in your task.
At the baptism of your child, you named Godparents to assist you in raising your child in the confession of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. In fulfillment of their vocation of supporting their Godchild in ongoing instruction and nurture in the Christian faith, I ask that you present these books of instruction to your child's Godparents.
P Hear the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark.
And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them. (Mark 10:13-16 ESV)
P Godparents and parents, please present your Godchildren/children their books, as together you say:
R Receive this book / that you may grow / in Jesus' love. / In the name of the Father, / and of the Son, / and of the Holy Spirit. / Amen.
P We pray:
Heavenly Father, mercifully bless the Christian education of Your children in our parish that they may grow up in Your fear to the praise of Your holy name. Bless our Sunday School, our Midweek Instruction and all other settings in which our children are brought closer to You. Restrain the activities of the evil one who would seek to undermine these efforts to provide for the spiritual growth of Your children. Help us to regard these children and our educational ministries as gifts from You. Encourage us as members of this congregation to support those who teach and those who learn. Give joy to all who serve as teachers, and give them the privilege of seeing the fruits of their labors; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
C Amen.
P Go in the name of the Lord. Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. The almighty and most merciful God, the Father, the T Son, and the Holy Spirit, bless and preserve you.
C Amen.
All return to their seats as a hymn of Christian Education is sung.
[The following hymn does not appear in our hymnal. Please print the lyrics in the bulletin and inform the organist that it is the same tune as "I Am Jesus' Little Lamb" (LSB #740). Lord, in Your mercy,
C hear our prayer.
P Take from us all hatred and prejudice, give us the spirit of love, and order our days in Your peace. Prosper the labor of those who work to bring peace and justice to the nations of the world that mutual understanding and common endeavor may be increased among all peoples. Lord, in Your mercy,

Take under Your special protection those whose work is difficult or dangerous, and be with all who put their hands to any useful task. Give them the just rewards for their labor and the knowledge that their work is a blessing in Your sight. Lord, in Your mercy,

P All these things and whatever else You know that we need, grant us, Father, for the sake of Him who died and rose again and now lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God forever.
C Amen.
P The Lord be with you.
C And with thy spirit.
P Lift up your hearts.
C We lift them up unto the Lord.
P Let us give thanks unto the Lord, our God.
C It is meet and right so to do.
P It is truly meet, right, and salutary . . . evermore praising You and saying:
P Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:
C Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth
as it is in heaven;
give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory
forever and ever. Amen.
P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”
In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
